I'm this close 🤏 to reinstalling back onto my Thinkpad. Might be a project for this weekend? :runbsd: :openbsd:

Compliments to whoever is responsible for the slackbuilds website, for a design that not only works, but also looks good in lynx.

This is the second article of this sort I've seen lately, along the lines of "I can't use linux because of my obscure workflow". The other one being a tech journalist trying to install linux on his MS Surface devices, expecting a single-click install scenario, then ditching it because 'no biometric login with the webcam'. I continue to be astounded by how so many other people use technology, and how foreign it seems.

Somehow a mobile-only workflow just seems weird to me, having grown up long before smart or mobile anything. I (regrettably) own a smartphone, and struggle to use it anytime I have to..

        Day two of adventures!

I ended up reinstalling, this time without the KDE sets and switching to using FVWM. While KDE is 'nice', I come from using OpenBSD with cwm, so I'm used to my X environment staying out of the way.

For the curious, the old laptop I'm using is my Lenovo X220, or what I consider to be the last laptop with a truly great keyboard.

Trying out on my old laptop today for the first time in forever. Impressions? It's exactly as I remember it 20+ years ago, except now everything works out of the box.

Two things I noticed right off: no systemd (or related dependencies) anywhere in sight, and LILO.
I've always been irritated by the systemd-ification of the linux ecosystem, so it's always nice when I don't see it, and I've never really understood how to work with GRUB, so LILO is really appreciated!

Slackware gets a lot of hate for being "outdated", but at first look, most packages aren't really any older than something like debian stable, and several like xscreensaver are much newer.

If you look into the plover community, there are plenty of great resources for learning it. The learning curve is very steep, but it's also very easy on the hands.

As I recall there are a few people who have custom vim bindings, and even write code using it.

The RC2014 mini-picasso may have started out as an April fools joke, but in reality it's a quite nice little BASIC, FORTH and Z80 ASM computer. I can't think of anything else that looks quite like it.
